Network Setup Tips
Best practices for running StageFlow on venue WiFi, corporate networks, and when internet is unreliable.
Network Requirements
StageFlow is designed to work on almost any internet connection. Minimum requirements:
- Internet connection (WiFi or cellular)
- HTTPS support (all modern browsers)
- WebSocket support (standard in all browsers)
There's no need for special ports, VPN configurations, or IT setup.
Venue WiFi
Most venues have WiFi that works perfectly with StageFlow. Tips for best results:
- Get the password early - Don't wait until showtime
- Test before the event - Verify connection works during setup
- Have a backup - Mobile hotspot as fallback
Watch Out: Captive Portals
Some venue WiFi requires accepting terms or entering credentials in a browser. Make sure all your devices have completed this step before the event starts.
Corporate Networks
Enterprise networks sometimes have stricter policies. StageFlow typically works because:
- Uses standard HTTPS (port 443)
- No special software installation required
- Browser-based - no firewall exceptions needed
If you encounter issues, check with IT about WebSocket support. Some proxy servers may need configuration to allow persistent connections.
Mobile Hotspots
Mobile hotspots are an excellent backup option and sometimes the primary choice for small events:
- Use 5GHz when possible - Less interference, faster speeds
- Limit connected devices - More devices = slower connection
- Monitor data usage - StageFlow uses minimal data, but other apps might not
- Keep the hotspot device charged - Or plugged in
Data Usage
StageFlow uses approximately 1-2 MB per hour per device. A 4-hour event with 5 devices would use less than 50 MB total.
Offline Resilience
StageFlow handles network interruptions gracefully:
- Timers continue running locally during disconnection
- Automatic reconnection when network returns
- State synchronization after reconnection
For critical events, we recommend having a backup network ready but rest assured that brief outages won't stop your timer.
Troubleshooting
Devices not syncing?
- Verify all devices are connected to the same network
- Refresh the browser on affected devices
- Check for captive portal requirements
Slow or laggy updates?
- Check network signal strength
- Reduce number of connected devices
- Switch to 5GHz band if available
Connection keeps dropping?
- Move closer to the WiFi access point
- Check for interference (microwaves, other electronics)
- Consider mobile hotspot as alternative
